Bills coach Rex Ryan had a surprising addition to the team's injury report following Thursday's practice.
"Might want to add Jack Eichel," Ryan said, referencing the Sabres star who suffered a high ankle sprain Wednesday. "That’s a lower-body for Eichel. Won’t be in the lineup tonight."
Ryan said he was bummed out when he heard of Eichel's injury.
"My thoughts are just like every other Sabres fan: You’re just like, aww man," Ryan said. "And we’re so bummed out because – I speak for the entire Sabres fan base – we were really looking forward to it. We think it’s going to be good year and all that, and it still very well could be. But man, it’s unfortunate because the kid’s a super player and [I was] really looking forward to him playing his sophomore year here. [Even] with that, I still think we have enough. We'll find a way and get it done."
After a discussion of Eichel, Ryan – who grew up a Maple Leafs fan while living with his mother in Toronto – was asked about Leafs rookie Auston Matthews, who scored four goals Wednesday in his NHL debut.
"I got no comment on Auston Matthews," Ryan said, laughing. "It was pretty amazing, wasn’t it? And they still lost! How do you score four goals with this kid and, oh by the way, you still lost. But yeah, no, it was unbelievable. [He] went a little too high for my liking in a fantasy hockey draft that we had. I was just getting ready to take him. Kind of wish I would’ve now."
