NIAGARA FALLS — City police chased a man with a loaded gun through the streets in broad daylight on Tuesday.
The chase ended in the arrest of Stephen A. Richards, 22, of Welch Avenue, who faces a long list of charges, including felony drug and weapons charges, according to Niagara Falls Police reports.
Police responded to a report of a subject with a gun at 11:30 a.m. in an alley east of 19th Street and Walnut Avenue. Seconds later, an officer reported spotting a man who fit the description who was later identified as Richards, according to police.
Police said they commanded Richards to stop and put his hands up, but he ran, leading officers on a foot chase through backyards and into a gas station parking lot. He reportedly reached into his pocket for what was later identified as a loaded handgun. Officers said they did not lose sight of Richards during the chase and saw him throw the gun onto the roof of a gas station, where it was later retrieved.
An officer said he subdued Richards, taking him to the ground. Police found a ziplock bag containing 4.6 grams of marijuana, six suboxone strips, prescription pills and crack cocaine broken into chunks stuck in the waistband of Richards' sweatpants, according to the reports.
He faces numerous charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of marijuana, criminal possession of a weapon, obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest.
