Fumes at Lewiston post office send eight to hospital

LEWISTON - Eight people were taken to the hospital after a liquid was released that created a strange odor and caused the Lewiston post office to be evacuated Wednesday morning, police said.

Eight post office employees who were in a back room at the South Eighth Street facility reported burning throats and watery eyes. All 16 employees who were working at the post office evacuated the building before police arrived on scene.

The report of the strange odor came in at 7:50 a.m. at the post office at 150 South Eighth St., according to Lewiston police.

The eight people are still at Mount St. Mary's Hospital and law enforcement and emergency responders are at the post office as officials are still trying to identify the substance.

The Erie County HazMat Team, State Police, Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Lewiston police and several fire departments and ambulances responded to the incident.

South Eighth Street and Cayuga Street both remain closed in that area, police said.
