Someone is calling local businesses posing as National Grid and threatening to disconnect their power unless they provide prepaid cards, according to the Erie County Sheriff's Office.
Several reports were made Tuesday about callers claiming to be from the utility and telling businesses they need to pay an invoice right away because a technician is en route to shut off their electricity, the sheriff's office said.
The caller pushes the business to call a 1-800 number and follow prompts to pay their bill by purchasing prepaid cards.
Authorities urge individuals to ignore the scammer and suggest calling their service provider at the phone number on their bill to verify the status of their account.
The sheriff's office called this the latest in a series of telephone scams where callers claim to be a representative of a utility company or government agency and threaten some type of punitive action unless the issue is settled immediately by phone.
