A new Single Hop Spirit
Lockhouse Distillery & Bar, 41 Columbia St. (481-1229)
Late last week, Lockhouse Distillery released a new series of spirits called Single Hop Spirits. This is a unique product involving a collaboration between the distillery and local breweries. There were six varieties produced, each featuring a different local brewery and a different hop.
All the hop varieties came from a local hop farm as well - the hops were grown and harvested by Willet Hop Farm (Willet, N.Y.) and Niagara Malt & Hops (Lockport). The collaborating breweries and hop varieties are:
- Big Ditch Brewing Co. (Cascade hops)
- Hamburg Brewing Co. (Chinook hops)
- Old First Ward Brewing (Crystal hops)
- Resurgence Brewing Co. (Alpha Aroma hops)
- Thin Man Brewery (Michigan Copper hops)
- New York beer Project (Tahoma hops)
Each hop variety showcases a different set of characteristics, just as in beers that use different varieties. Some varieties will have more citrusy or piney qualities, while others may have more earthy or floral character.
Unlike a traditional India Pale Ale, the spirit is smooth and without the astringent bitterness that comes from hops boiled in beer. Distillery Manager Cory Muscato said they took great pains to create these spirits without heating the hops, so as to not isomerize any of the alpha acids (the hop compounds responsible for bittering).
The concept of this product is to introduce craft beer bars and craft beer consumers to the world of craft spirits in a way at would be familiar to them," said Muscato. "We also hope it introduces craft cocktail bars and consumers to the breweries we collaborated with."
The 750 mL bottles are available at Lockhouse for $35, as well as at liquor stores, bars and restaurants.
12 Gates West Coast IPA sampling
5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 14 at Wegmans, 8270 Transit Road, Williamsville (636-5600)
12 Gates Brewing Company will offer samples of the West Coast IPA at this recently remodeled Wegmans which now includes an on-site The Pub by Wegmans. Samples of the flagship beer will be available at its grand reopening party on Oct. 14.
The West Coast IPA is described as “a true-to-style West Coast IPA with a heavy dose of Citra hops in both mid- to late-stage additions, coming off the soft, clean bittering additions of Warrior hops.
With dry hop additions, this Citra-bomb smacks the tongue with notes of tropical citrus, grapefruit, and lemon, atop a foundation of a crisp and clean malt background. This beer has a great kick with all the accompanying flavor and aroma to back it up.”
Flying Bison to release Brindle Porter
Noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 14 at Flying Bison Brewing Company, 840 Seneca St. (873-1557)
Flying Bison Brewing Company will be releasing its seasonal Brindle Porter on Oct. 14. The beer will be available to drink by the glass at the brewery.
Brindle Porter is an English-style Porter that harkens back to the dark brown porters of London from centuries ago. Medium-bodied and full of sweet caramel, soft roast and dark chocolate flavors, this is a beer meant to be highly sessionable but not sacrificing flavor. UK Fuggles hops provide a bright floral flavor and aroma to round out this 5.4 percent ABV beer.
In addition, to celebrate this release, Flying Bison will be pouring a cask of its 2015 Spot Coffee Stout. Dark beer lovers won’t want to miss this event.
