Pick your scarecrow in Hamburg - for a good cause

Some are a bit scary, others are ragamuffin vagabonds, movie stars - and cultural sensations.

Extra figures are appearing on Buffalo and Main streets in Hamburg, and it's a chance for local youth groups to raise money.

Nineteen groups have used their imagination to create scarecrows, and placed them in front of businesses that sponsored them. Members of the public can start voting on which one they like on Saturday, through Oct. 30. Voting forms can be picked up at Gear for Adventure, Main Street Ice Cream or Prima Oliva.

The three groups with the most votes will win money prizes for their group: $125 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third. There also is a judge's award for the most original and well constructed scarecrow, which is $80.

The Village Business Advisory Council organized the contest, and the prizes are supplied by the sponsoring businesses.
