The Western New York Flash have a big game Sunday.
The team spent Thursday preparing for the National Women’s Soccer League championship game against Washington in Houston, while receiving a bunch of big honors.
Star forward Lynn Williams earned a big one, the NWSL’s Golden Boot Award for scoring the most goals.
Williams tied for the league lead in goals with 11 but earned the award based on having more assists (five) than Houston’s Kealia Ohai (four). Williams scored seven more goals this year than she did as a rookie in 2015.
She scored twice during the first of two overtime periods to lead the Flash past Portland, 4-3, in the NWSL semifinals last Sunday.
Williams also was one of three members of the Flash named to the 24-person U.S. National Women’s Team training camp roster ahead of the club’s two matches against Switzerland later this month. Joining Williams will be fellow first-time invitee Abby Dahlkemper and past U.S. National Team member Sam Mewis.
Dahlkemper played every minute of the season on defense, notching two goals and an assist. Mewis, a member of the Olympic Team, had three goals and an assist from the midfield position.
