Ryan O’Reilly didn’t make it through the Buffalo Sabres' preseason game Wednesday night, his first action back with the team after World Cup of Hockey duty with Team Canada.
O’Reilly left the Sabres’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes after one period with what the hockey team called a lower body injury.
O’Reilly missed his shifts late in the opening period and was not on the bench to start the second period of the preseason game at the Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
According to the Sabres' official team Twitter account, O'Reilly was held out of the game as a precaution. The tweet read: "Coach Bylsma says Ryan O'Reilly was held out of the rest of the game as a 'precautionary' measure. Tweaked something in a muscle."

Jeff Skinner, the third Carolina shooter, had the only goal in the shootout, beating Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark.
Rookie Alexander Nylander, Evander Kane and Matt Moulson failed in the Sabres’ three shootout tries against Carolina’s Eddie Lack. Sergey Tolchinsky and Teuvo Teravainen missed for Carolina before Skinner tallied.
The Hurricanes took a 2-0 lead in the game on a first period goal by Roland McKeown and a power-play tally in the second by Elias Lundholm. West Seneca native Lee Stempniak and Skinner assisted on McKeown’s goal. Teravainen and Sebastian Aho had the assist on Lundholm’s tally.
Kane got one back for Buffalo with a goal at 12:00 of the second. Derek Grant had his fifth point in five preseason games when he assisted on Kane’s goal. In the third, rookie Justin Bailey scored short-handed to tie the game at 2-2.
Bailey was one of three Sabres called up from Rochester to play in Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over the Hurricanes in Marquette, Mich. and in Sault Ste. Marie. Bailey, Jean Dupuy and Daniel Catenacci all played junior hockey in the Soo for the Greyhounds.
Buffalo (3-3-1) closes out the preseason schedule on Friday night against the Senators in Ottawa (MSG, Radio 550, 7:30 p.m.). The regular season opener is Oct. 13 against the Montreal Canadiens at KeyBank Center.
O’Reilly rejoined the Sabres on Tuesday and took part in the pregame skate Wednesday. “I feel a little bit more tired than I normally am from a pregame skate,” he said. “It’s good to be back out there skating with the whole team. It was nice to get my feet moving around and kind of get in those game situations.”
