Lockport salutes firefighters who fought fatal HTI fire

LOCKPORT - The 60 fire departments from three counties that helped battle the huge fire at HTI Recycling in Lockport will be saluted during a public event at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Historic Palace Theatre, 2 East Ave.

The Salute to the Stevens Street Heroes will be hosted by Mayor Anne E. McCaffrey and Lockport Fire Chief Patrick K. Brady. All of the 60 fire departments have been asked to send a representative to accept a proclamation of thanks from Lockport officials. The event is free and open to the public.

The $5.25 million fire that was set Aug. 10 in a vacant building on the Stevens Street side of the HTI property burned until Aug. 13 and resulted in the death of Joe Phillips. Phillips, 14, is believed to be one of the teenagers involved in starting the fire. Charges against as many as two other teens are pending.
