Long-time Western New York college coach Don Silveri of Hamburg will be among the 2017 inductees into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. The ceremonies will be held March 25 as part of the New York Federation Tournament in Heritage Hall of the Glens Falls Civic Center.
Silveri is the men’s basketball coach and director of athletics at Villa Maria after a long stint as men’s coach and director of athletics at Daemen College (1989-2013). Before that he was coach at Villa Maria (1976-80), assistant coach at Buffalo State (1981-83) and head coach at Erie Community College (1983-1986).
Silveri’s overall coaching record is 591-409.
He played baseball and basketball at Niagara County Community College and Brockport State. He holds a masters degree from Buffalo State.
At ECC, he directed the Kats to two Empire State Conference championships. His resume at Daemen includes nine 20-win seasons. As athletics director he presided over the expansion of the varsity sports program that eventually led to membership in NCAA Division II and the East Coast Conference. He moved on to Villa in 2015 when the college resumed its intercollegiate sports program.
Silveri will be the second Villa coach in the state Hall of Fame. Sister Maria Peres, who also coached at the college, was elected in 2012.
