Joy ride causes damage in a Niagara Falls park

NIAGARA FALLS – A joy ride through Jayne Park is not bringing city workers much joy as they repair deep, circular tire marks found in a field west of the park’s baseball diamonds over the weekend.

Damages were estimated at $1,500 and are believed to have been caused by a large truck.

John P. Caso, director of public works, said Tuesday that the city has had problems for years with four-wheelers damaging the greens at the golf course.

“You have a beautiful park and you get someone who wants to drive through the park, have a little fun, and damage the park and it ruins it for everyone else - the people who utilize the park,” said Caso.

He said the damage can be repaired by the city, but it will take workers away from previously scheduled jobs.

Police said a witness was awakened by the sound of an engine revving and tires squealing around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Deep tire tracks, which started at the corner of Griffon and Joliet avenues, continued into the middle of the park, according to police.
