LUCAS, Thomas William

LUCAS - Thomas William Age 87, of the City of Tonawanda, died September 29, 2016, after enduring a lengthy illness. The beloved husband of Carol Glastetter Lucas, they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Tom "Luke" Lucas was born on
November 24, 1928 in Mount Vernon, NY to Elizabeth Burckhardt Lucas and William Thomas Couch Lucas. He was raised with his sister, the late Marie Elizabeth Lucas Miller, in Yonkers and Mamaroneck, NY, until the family
relocated to Buffalo in 1943. Tom was a 1946 graduate of Bennett High School, after which he proudly enlisted in The United States Marine Corps. Upon finishing his military service, he attended Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA. He was a life-time member of the Conrad Kania Det. of the Marine Corps League. Tom's penchant for people and service found expression during the past 15 years as a volunteer at the Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center. Tom will especially be remembered as an ardent outdoorsman, an exceptional marksman, hunter and fisherman who loved being in the church of the great outdoors. He was a life-time member of the Tonawanda Sportsman Club. Tom enjoyed playing the harmonica and he always had a happy and loyal dog to fetch his slippers and tug at his heartstrings at the end of the day. In years past Tom would organize pick up baseball and football games, as well as waterskiing for the kids around Englewood Ave; he coached Hertel North Park Little League Baseball at Shoshone Park and also assisted at the Roosevelt Ice Rink and Regals Hockey in Buffalo. Tom escorted doctors and nurses to area hospitals during the brutal days and nights of the Blizzard of '77. For countless years he readily and cheerfully cleared the snow for his Mullen St. neighbors. He was a baseball natural, a Bills and Sabres enthusiast. Memories of Tom are cherished by his family: son, William Thomas, of Tonawanda, and grandson Thomas William (Kerriann) and great-grandchildren William Thomas and Clarissa; grandson David (Jennifer); grandson Matthew (Lauren); daughter, Linda Lucas Sweeney and husband, David, of Kenmore and granddaughter Sara Gale Zilliox and great-granddaughters Gillian Stafford and Avalynn Bax; granddaughter Katie Root Remmes and great-granddaughter Rianne; granddaughter Brenda Sweeney
