An invaluable experience for a young writer

In high school, I knew I wanted to be a journalist, but I didn’t know what that entailed. Writing for NeXt gave me the experience and clips I needed to get there, and more.

I wrote for NeXt from ages 15 to 18, until I was a freshman at St. Bonaventure University. While covering concerts and refugee resettlement, exchange students and sibling rivalry, I learned interviewing, researching and writing techniques and became addicted to seeing my work in print.

The skills I learned as a NeXt correspondent helped land me a job as a reporter then editor at the Springville Journal, then the Sun in Hamburg, as well as freelance gigs for, The Buffalo News, Buffalo Spree, and many others.

Today, I try to pass it along to my own students at Canisius College, where I teach journalism.

There’s no education like experience, and mine at NeXt was invaluable.
