St. Bonaventure guard Jay Adams and University at Buffalo guard Joanna Smith were named preseason Big 4 basketball players of the year Wednesday.
The preseason all-Big 4 teams were released at a news conference to promote the Big 4 double-header, which will be held Dec. 17 at KeyBank Arena. St. Bonaventure will face Niagara at 1 p.m., and Canisius will play UB at 3:30 p.m.
Adams, a junior guard, led Bona to a 22-9 record last season. He averaged 17.9 ppg and was a first-team all-Atlantic 10 Conference selection.
The other members of the Big 4 men’s first team entering the 2016-17 season were: UB forward Blake Hamilton, Niagara guard Matt Scott, Canisius forward Phil Valenti and UB guard CJ Massinburg.
Smith, a senior guard, averaged 18.3 ppg in leading UB to a 20-14 record and an NCAA Tournament berth. She was a first-team pick in the Mid-American Conference.
The other members of the Big 4 women’s first team were: Bona’s Mariah Ruff, UB’s Stephanie Reid, Niagara’s Victoria Rampado and Canisius' Margaret Halfdanardottir.
