A flight from Niagara Falls to Fort Lauderdale made an emergency landing early Monday morning at Buffalo Niagara International Airport after the pilot saw flames coming from the back of one of the plane’s engines.
Spirit Airlines Flight 647 took off from Niagara Falls International Airport at 2:21 a.m. The A320 Airbus was in the air a few minutes when a pilot noticed the flames, said Doug Hartmayer, spokesman for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority.
The pilot shut down the engine and diverted the flight to the airport in Cheektowaga, where the plane landed safely at 2:31 a.m., Hartmayer said.
Spirit Airlines personnel assisted travelers who were on the flight, he said.
There were 145 people aboard the plane, which was being checked Monday morning.
