Olympic bicyling medalist to lead Slow Roll on Monday

Nelson “the Cheetah” Vails, the first African-American to win an Olympic medal in bicycling, will lead Monday’s Slow Roll community bike ride from the historic Colored Musicians Club at 145 Broadway.

Bicyclists will meet up at 5:30 p.m., with the ride commencing at 6:30 p.m.

Vails, who is from Harlem and was once a bicycle messenger, won the silver medal for Team USA in the track cycling sprint during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. After competing professionally from 1988-95, He became a TV bicyling commentator and participant in bicycling safety programs across the country.
