Weakley's replacement not likely until after WIVB ownership change

Inquiring minds want to know: Who is going to replace Teresa Weakley as the co-anchor of WIVB-TV’s morning program “Wake Up!”

Channel 4 representatives are offering little clue in the first week since Weakley left for a similar morning anchor job in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Channel 4 interim news director Lisa Polster only wrote in a text that Brittni Smallwood is in the role opposite co-anchor Jordan Williams for now.

Polster didn’t respond to a question about whether the permanent replacement will have to wait until Nexstar takes over ownership of the station. That is expected to happen sometime later this year.

One would expect Nexstar would prefer to have the new permanent news director have a role in the decision since the morning program is so important to any station's success these days.

The “Wake Up!” ratings for the first three days co-anchored by Smallwood have been similar or slightly higher to what they were when Weakley was the co-anchor.

At 6 a.m. Monday, Channel  4’s “Wake Up!” (5.5) was a close second to Channel 2’s “Daybreak” (5.8).

At 6 a.m. Tuesday, “Daybreak” was ahead, 5.5.-4.7.

At 6 a.m. Wednesday, “Daybreak” was ahead, 6.2-4.5.

In each case, Channel 7's morning program remains a weak third.
