After massive water main break, Erie County Water Authority unveils new system for customer alerts

Two months after it was criticized for delays in providing information to the public about a boil-water notice after a massive water main break, the Erie County Water Authority has unveiled a new customer alert system.

Customers can sign up to receive notifications by email, text or phone to get alerted of water main breaks or other “vital issues” in their area, the water authority said in a news release.

To sign up, visit or text “water” to 1-844-716-3292. Message and data rates may apply.

After a water main broke in Amherst on July 20, the authority didn’t notify the public of a boil-water advisory and potential exposure to contamination until at least three hours after they knew of the situation.

Customers who previously registered their phone number with the authority have to re-register with the new system in order to receive alerts.

The authority worked with IVR Technology Group of Amherst to institute the system.
