LOCKPORT – Edmund F. Merchant Jr., who stole copper pipes from the vacant office of the Niagara Falls physician dubbed “Dr. Feel Good,” has pleaded guilty and assigned to a court-supervised drug treatment program.
Merchant, 29, of Seventh Street in the Falls, risks up to seven years in prison if he washes out of the treatment program that Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon ordered.
Merchant, who admitted to third-degree burglary, was arrested beside a stack of freshly cut pipes Dec. 5 in the basement of the former Main Street office of Dr. Pravin V. Mehta.
Mehta, dubbed “Dr. Feel Good” for his openhanded painkiller prescriptions pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy after being indicted on charges of illegally prescribing drugs. He is serving two years in federal prison and owes a $500,000 fine.
