Shirley R. Crooks, who served in the Navy during the Korean War era and was an active veteran, died Thursday in her West Seneca home after a lengthy illness. She was 88.
Born in Franklinville, she was a graduate of Buffalo’s East High School. During four years in the Navy she was stationed in San Diego as a disbursing clerk.
A longtime resident of Williamsville, she worked for about 15 years as a bookkeeper for Lang Electric. She retired in the 1970s.
She was a life member of ERIECO Women’s Post 1586 American Legion and was active in its color guard, and a charter member of WAVES National, Buffalo-area WAVES 143, for which she served as treasurer, and the Women’s Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. She also is listed on the Navy Memorial in the nation’s capital.
She was a volunter for Meals on Wheels and an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, 6540 Main St., Williamsville, where services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday.
