Orchard Park police early Friday said an intoxicated driver struck a telephone pole on Big Tree Road overnight, and a section of Big Tree Road was closed while NYSEG made repairs to the pole to restore power.
Big Tree Road (Route 20A) was closed from Center Drive to Cobham Drive, police say, while NYSEG crews repaired the pole. Among the customers affected by the power outage was South Davis Elementary School, which was closed Friday. Orchard Park Middle School had an early release, at 10:30a.m.
Police urged motorist to use caution if they approach an intersection with the traffic light not functioning, and treat it as a four-way stop.
The pole was hit at 2:53 a.m., according to police, and officers found a 2011 Dodge Ram with major damage, including a deployed airbag, being driven six minutes later on Thorn Avenue about a half mile from the scene. After a short time, Anthony Peters, 21, of Orchard Park, stopped the vehicle and was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of an open container of alcohol in a moving vehicle, and numerous other traffic infractions, police said.
Peters was held for arraignment Friday in Orchard Park Town Court.
