LOCKPORT – Mark L. George Jr., who raped and impregnated a 15-year-old girl earlier this year, accepted a plea offer Friday.
George, 38, of Birchwood Drive, Town of Lockport, was living in North Tonawanda at the time of the crime.
He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted first-degree rape in return for a statement from Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Robert A. Zucco that he won’t request a sentence of longer than 10 years in prison.
But County Judge Sara Sheldon made no promises, and she has the authority to send George to prison for as long as 15 years when he returns to court Dec. 2. George also will face five to 15 years of post-release supervision and lifetime registration as a sex offender.
George had been having sex with the North Tonawanda girl during January and February of this year, resulting in a pregnancy that was terminated through an abortion, according to authorities. A DNA test showed George almost certainly was the father.
The original indictment also had accused George of sexually abusing the same girl in 2012, when she was 11 years old.
Friday, George admitted to forcibly raping the girl on Jan. 18.
Assistant Public Defender A. Joseph Catalano said George has suffered from mental health issues since he was a child. George said in court that he understands English but doesn’t read or write very well. Two court-appointed psychologists had ruled George was mentally competent to stand trial.
He is being held without bail in the County Jail to await sentencing.
