Anne H. Newton, who served as Alden town clerk for almost three decades, died Thursday in Harris Hill Nursing Home. She was 91.
Born in Buffalo, the former Anne Harbison graduated in 1941 from Parker High School in Clarence. She also was a graduate of Bryant & Stratton Business Institute.
Mrs. Newton retired in 1989 after serving as town clerk from 1961-89. A Republican, she served as deputy clerk before running for office.
Before becoming town clerk, she worked for United Cork, was a senior stenographer for the Erie County Health Department and was a clerk for the Alden Central School District.
Mrs. Newton held the Bible during swearing-in ceremonies in 2013 for the current Alden town clerk, Debra Christ, who is her daughter.
Mrs. Newton was active in the Auxiliary of Post 1377, Alden American Legion and Alden Senior Citizens. She also was a member of the Alden Fire Company Auxiliary and an honorary lifetime member of the Crittenden Fire Company.
Her husband, Liol Newton, died in 2000.
Survivors in addition to her daughter include a sister, Martha Zimmerman; one grandson; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at noon Saturday in Charles Meyer Funeral Home, 13228 Broadway, Alden.
