Erie Community College scored all four of its touchdowns in the third quarter, two on passes by Sam Castronova, in rallying for a 34-28 football victory over Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio.
The Kats (2-1) trailed, 14-3, at the half but Castronova (Williamsville South) threw a touchdown pass to Stephon Hawthorne for 32 yards to start the rally. ECC recovered an onside kick and took the lead, 17-14, on a 6-yard run by Anthony Stitt.
Before the third quarter was over, Castronova passed 24 yards to De’Mario Jones for a touchdown and after Hocking had closed to 24-22, D’Andre Jenkins intercepted a Hocking pass and returned it 31 yards to the 13-yard line. That set up a 1-yard run by Daytwon Burney.
ECC’s other points came on field goals by Jonathan Royster in the first quarter (31 yards) and fourth (47). The latter made it 34-22 with 4:23 left in the game.
Castronova completed 12 of 20 passes for 160 yards. Seven of his completions went to Hawthorne for 19 yards. The Kats’ defense yielded 310 yards but had one fumble recovery and two interceptions and a pair of sacks.
ECC’s next game will be Sept. 25 at the Brockport State JVs.
