Steak knife used in gang assault stabbing

An early morning argument Thursday between a 25-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man in the Lovejoy neighborhood escalated into a gang assault that resulted in the stabbing of one woman with a steak knife, reported police.

The attack occurred at 12:30 a.m. on the corner of North Central and Broadway near Bailey Avenue, said East Ferry Station police.

The 21-year-old victim was taken to ECMC by ambulance and treated for a stab wound to her left chest and shoulder area.

One witness told police five people – three women and two men – were punching and kicking the woman. The witness told police that in addition to the steak knife, a coat hanger formed into a “shank” was used as a weapon.

Toni A. Karmpen, 25, of Clinton Street – the woman involved in the initial argument – was charged with gang assault. Police are seeking additional suspects involved in the assault.

Police did not reveal what sparked the violent confrontation.
