Pets saved from hot van in Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS – A police officer on Thursday smashed a window of a van that had two dogs and two cats inside and an interior temperature of more than 100 degrees.

The incident happened at about 2:30 p.m. on Niagara Street in front of the Rainbow Bridge plaza and next to the One Niagara building, according to a Niagara Falls police report.

Police responded to the report of a dog inside a yellow, 2005 Volkswagen Vanagon with windows only slightly cracked. An officer saw a large German Shepherd on the front passenger seat panting heavily, according to the police report.

The officer’s infrared thermometer measured a temperature inside the van as 102.5 degrees.

Once the officer smashed the driver’s side window, another dog and a black cat were found in the van and removed through a rear door.

Police were told another cat jumped out of the window of the van, which had a Netherlands registration.

The three animals removed by police from the vehicle were taken to the SPCA of Niagara.

The report did not indicate whether police were able to contact the vehicle’s users.
