Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Buffalo is going to war with dishonest, for-profit debt settlement companies – and it’s hitting them where they live.
The nonprofit credit counseling agency will launch targeted advertising on radio and social media – two places the unscrupulous companies notoriously troll for customers.
The ads feature a local client, Christina, who paid off $20,000 in debt with CCCS’s help, and who was able to purchase a home and car.
People like Christina are a prime target for for-profit companies, CCCS said. Because they’re often embarrassed and desperate, they can easily fall prey to a for-profit agency’s predatory terms and fees. After being charged hefty fees, they may end up owing more than they did in the first place.
CCCS does not charge clients for services. It also provides confidential financial guidance, education and counseling, as well as credit repayment assistance. It serves customers from its main office in West Seneca and seven satellite offices as well as via telephone and internet.
