St. Bonaventure’s men’s basketball team opens its Atlantic 10 Conference home season against powerful Dayton and closes its regular season at home against Massachusetts.
The full Atlantic 10 schedule was released Tuesday. The Bonnies’ non-conference slate, previously announced, features a road game at Florida and an appearance in the Lone Star Shootout in Austin, Texas.
More television is one feature of the schedule. Of Bona's 18 A-10, 13 will be aired on one network or another (mostly the American Sports Network.) Another feature is a more favorable date for Bona's annual game at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. The Bonnies meet Fordham in Rochester on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Last year's Rochester game was a late-season, crucial meeting with St. Joseph's (which Bona won). Fordham is not as highly ranked as St. Joe's. Bona's students are on break for the Fordham game, just as they were for last year's St. Joe's game. The Fordham game is one of five home games during which time the Bona students are on mid-semester break. The others are against Army, Canisius, Dayton and George Mason.
Bona went 22-9 last season and shared the A-10 regular-season title with Dayton and Virginia Commonwealth. VCU visits the Reilly Center on Feb. 4. One tough-looking stretch of the season comes the second half of February, when Bona has four road games against difficult A-10 foes in a six-game stretch. Those road games are at George Washington, Dayton, St. Joe's and Davidson.
Bona has back-to-back non-conference games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season. The Bonnies play host to UB on Dec. 8 and then visit Hofstra Dec. 6. Bona's foes in the Lone Star Shootout are Arkansas Little Rock, Central Michigan and Pepperdine. Bona makes an appearance in First Niagara Center against Niagara as part of the Big 4 double-header on Dec. 17.
