Former Canisius College basketball player Chris Manhertz will start the coming NFL season on the roster of the New Orleans Saints.
The former Golden Griffin made the roster of the Saints on Saturday when the team trimmed its roster to 53 players. The 6-foot-6 Manhertz will play tight end.
Manhertz signed his first contract with the Buffalo Bills in Dec. 2014, but moved on to the Saints in 2015. He was on the team’s practice squad last season.
His chances of making the opening day roster improved when Saints’ tight end Michael Hoomanawanui suffered a leg injury on Friday night. Manhertz looks to be the third-string tight end.
He ranks fourth in Canisius basketball history with 789 career rebounds, and led the team in that category for three straight years. Manhertz is the first Canisius player to be on an NFL roster since Mike Panepinto was on the Buffalo Bills during the 1987 season.
