Nearly 600 West Side customers of National Grid lost power Sunday morning, after a repair job on an underground line in a manhole went slightly awry.
Utility workers were fixing a faulty disconnect switch in the manhole, but when they tried to power back up, a failed splice in the line caused 589 customers to lose electricity, said National Grid spokeswoman Nicole Jezykowski.
Since the crew was already on site, however, they were quickly able to start work on restoring power. “They were just standing by, and realized that more needed to be done,” Jezykowski said.
By mid-afternoon, just 242 customers remained without power, and officials expected all customers to be back online by 9:30 p.m.
