Newfane girls top Wilson
Wilson lost only one league game, to Newfane, in its march to the Niagara-Orleans girls soccer championship in 2015. Tuesday, the Panthers did it again, defeating the Wilson Lakewomen, 2-1, on Lila Maurer’s goal in the 17th minute of overtime with an assist by Adelyn Burns.
Alaina Jonathan had scored the other Newfane goal in the 22nd minute of the second half. Madalyn Traverse made 19 saves for Newfane.
In another N-O league opener, Jenna Robnett scored twice and Kara Seguin had a goal and an assist for Akron in a 4-1 win over Albion. Laura Poeller made 20 saves for the Tigers. Emily Blanchard had the Albion goal.
Hamburg-South 2-1 again
Champion Hamburg and second-place Williamsville South split a pair 2-1 games in ECIC II boys soccer last season. Tuesday, they did it again. This time the Bulldogs came out on top, 2-1, over South on a pair of first-half goals by Justin Weiskerger.
Elsewhere in ECIC II, Nathan Sorgi scored the lone goal and Andrew Hetzendorfer made four saves for Iroquois in a 1-0 triumph over Amherst.
Williamsville North, ranked No. 2 among WNY large schools behind Grand Island but a runner-up to Lancaster in ECIC I, opened its league season with a 2-0 victory over West Seneca West.
OP drops v-ball opener
Orchard Park was the Section VI representative in the state intersectional Division I boys volleyball championship a year ago. Tuesday, the Quakers’ dropped their first dual match of the season, but were impressive despite losing in straight sets to Penfield of Section V, 29-27, 25-19 and 27-25.
Penfield lost only twice all last season, once to eventual state champion McQuaid. OP was ranked No. 2 in last year’s WNY Coaches’ Poll behind Canisius.
