McMahon - Reverend Patrick, O. Carm Age 67 on August 29, 2016 in Englewood, New Jersey. Visitation for the Reverend Patrick McMahon, O. Carm., will be held on Thursday, September 1, 2016, at St. The;rse Church, 120 Monroe Avenue, Cresskill, New Jersey, 07626, from 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM with prayer service at 7:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, September 2, 2016 also at St. The;rse Church, Cresskill, New Jersey, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 10 Serpentine Road, Tenafly, New Jersey, 07670. Patrick was born in Buffalo, New York on November 23, 1948 to (the late) Charles Francis McMahon and (the late) Maureen (Sullivan) McMahon and his given name at baptism was Patrick Thomas. He is survived by his brothers Charles (late Joyce), Martin (Michelle), and Laurence (Siobhan), and by his sisters Jeanne (Joseph) Malloy, Michele (Richard) Albert, and Susan McMahon. Patrick attended St. Martin Grade School and Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York. He went on to Mount Carmel College in Niagara Falls for his pre-novitiate, after which he entered the Carmelite novitiate in New Baltimore, Pennsylvania, professing simple vows as a Carmelite on August 22, 1968. He went on to earn a degree in history from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; he did a year internship at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Darien, Illinois, and another year at Mount Carmel High School in Houston, Texas; he studied at the Washington Theological Union in Washington, DC, earning a master's degree in theological studies. While in Washington, DC, he made his solemn profession with the Carmelites on April 13, 1974, and was ordained a deacon on May 10, 1975. He was ordained a Carmelite priest on May 21, 1976, at St. Martin's Church in Buffalo, New York. He later earned both a master's degree and a doctorate degree in history from New York University in New York, New York. Father Patrick's first assignments were in 1977 as both parochial vicar at St. Cecilia Parish in Englewood, New Jersey, and as the local vocation director. In 1979 he was appointed associate pastor at St. The;rse Parish in Cresskill, New Jersey, while continuing his work as the local vocation director. In 1983 he took a sabbatical year to study at the Collegio Internazionale Sant' Alberto in Rome, Italy. He was then appointed parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish in Closter, New Jersey. In 1991 he moved to Whitefriars Hall in Washington, DC, to work on his doctoral dissertation. While there he served as the business manager at Whitefriars Hall, and later as the director of the Carmelitana Collection at Whitefriars Hall. In 1998 he was appointed the Lay Carmelite provincial delegate in Darien, Illinois. From 2001 to 2008 he served as president of the Institutum Carmelitanum at the Centro Internazionale Sant' Alberto and then taught at the Washington Theological Union for four years until it closed its doors in 2012. From 2012 to 2013 he served for a year as president of the North American Carmelite Institute and taught at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In 2013, Father Patrick was appointed parochial vicar at St. The;rse Parish in Cresskill, New Jersey, where he remained until his death. May he rest in peace.
