Lack of lifeguards shuts down all but one of Niagara Falls pools

NIAGARA FALLS – With most college students either heading back to school or getting ready to head back, the City of Niagara Falls Department of Public Works announced Monday that all city pools, with the exception of the Hyde Park Spray Park, will immediately be closed for the season.

“We just ran out of trained personnel, so we made the decision to shut down all the big city pools,” said John Caso, director of the DPW.

He said it’s hard to get certified and trained lifeguards and said many of their lifeguards are college students.

Caso said the three large city parks pools at 91st Street, Centre Court and Hyde Park were closed for the season, but the Hyde Park Splash Park will remain open through Labor Day.

Splash Park hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and on Labor Day Monday.
