Disaster aid sought for Lockport business damaged in massive fire

LOCKPORT – State Sen. Robert G. Ortt wants federal disaster assistance for High Tread International, the tire recycling plant damaged in a massive fire earlier this month.

Ortt wrote to the Small Business Administration on Aug. 19 to request that the agency conduct a “preliminary damage assessment,” Ortt’s office said in a news release.

The fire, which caused the surrounding neighborhood to be evacuated, is believed to have been an arson, though that hasn’t been officially confirmed by investigators. The blaze damaged four buildings and 8 million pounds of crumb rubber.

The body of Joe Phillips, 14, was found in the rubble of the fire.
