HARTLAND -- A 47-year-old Somerset man was arrested late Friday afternoon and accused of driving a car stolen in the state of Florida, Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies reported.
Carl J. Rivers was pursued in the afternoon after deputies received “anonymous information” about him driving a car recently stolen in Pasco County, Florida.
When the deputies urged Rivers to pull over, he refused and drove off until he struck a rock on Harltand Road and then tried to run off on foot. He was captured about 4:30 p.m.
Rivers was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed driving and numerous traffic infractions, Voutour said.
Rivers was arraigned before Hartland Town Justice Joanne L. Sullivan and remanded to the Niagara County Jail in Lockport without bail. Rivers will remain in custody until he is returned to Hartland Town Court for further proceedings at 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
