GLEASON, Helen Waldron

GLEASON, Helen Waldron

GLEASON - Helen Waldron Age 100, passed away August 17, 2016. She was born in Cortland, NY on May 16, 1916 and attended Cortland Normal School (now SUNY Cortland), graduating with a degree in Elementary Education in 1938. She began her teaching career in Marathon, NY, in a one-room schoolhouse, heated with a wood-burning stove, teaching a class of students of multiple grades. She met her husband-to-be, Edward F. Gleason of Niagara Falls, NY, in 1940. They married in 1941 and moved to Niagara Falls, where Edward worked for the E. I. DuPont Corporation. Their first son, Edward S., was born in April 1942. Their second son, David P., was born in April 1945. Helen returned to teaching in the Niagara Falls system in 1950, when David began kindergarten. Both Helen and Ed retired in the summer of 1974 and began their retirement years as "snowbirds," for 25 years, passing winters in their home in Brooksville, FL and their summers at their summer home on Chase Lake in the Adirondacks. Their world was full of dancing and golf and family visits to the lake in the summer and Florida's sunshine in the winter, and holidays together with family. As time passed, the trips back and forth became difficult so they moved to Amberleigh, an independent living community in Williamsville, NY. Edward passed in 2005. Helen moved to Glenwood (now Elderwood at Williamsville), an assisted living community, in 2010 and spent six years of comfortable, pleasant life there, amid her friends and in the excellent care of the Glenwood staff, with frequent visits by her local family. In May 2016, Helen's youngest grandchild, Thomas and his fiance;e;, were wed. Helen attended the wedding. During the cake-cutting at the reception, a second cake was brought forth that had "100" atop it, and 151 people sang "Happy Birthday" to her, making a happy memory for family and friends and celebrating the togetherness that everyone shared. In addition to her husband Ed, Helen was predeceased by her granddaughter Gretchen Elizabeth Gleason. She is survived by her two sons, Edward S. and David P. (Rosemary George) Gleason. Her grandchildren include Melissa (Chris) Udy, Nicholas (Eleanor) and Thomas (Sara) Gleason, Jennifer (Scott) Yacka and David Robinson Gleason. Helen also was blessed with six great-grandchildren: Christopher, Tom and Evan Yacka, and Abigail, Bennett and Katie Udy. A Memorial Service will be held in the near future.
