Sledgehammer, out of the Buffalo Yacht Club with owner Tom Lewin at the helm, won the J120 Class National Championship Regatta held off the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit. The J120 is a 40-foot boat with a huge asymmetrical spinnaker.

Sledgehammer had five first places in the 11-race series held over three days last weekend on Lake St. Clair, finishing with 31 points in the low-points scoring system over 13 other yachts from Michigan, Ohio and Toronto. Sledgehammer also won the prestigious Port Huron to Mackinac Race in 2013.

Lewin’s crew included his son, Tommy, and Tommy and Mark Christensen of Santa Cruz, Calif., Doug Bienko, Pat and Mike Augello, Larry Militello, Peter Johnson and Anthony Alexander all of Buffalo.


BASEBALL: Buffalo Outlaws 14U Final Tryouts will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s High School Varsity Field, 142 Laverack Ave., Lancaster. ... The Zoar Valley Eagles travel team in Gowanda will hold tryouts for the 9U and 10U 2017 season from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 11 and 12 at Gowanda VFW Field. BASKETBALL: PAL Fall High School Basketball teams are needed for Tuesday night girls varsity at Hennepin Community Center, and Wednesdays or Thursdays for boys varsity and JV at Machnica Community Center. A co-ed youth basketball clinic will take place at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays for ages 6-8 and from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays for ages 9-12. GOLF: The annual Looby-Lewis Memorial Golf Tournament will take place Monday, Oct. 3 at Harvest Hill Golf Course in Orchard Park. Proceeds help benefit the Bishop Timon High School Crew team. HOCKEY: The Dunkin’ Donuts “Learn to Skate and Play Hockey Classes” for boys and girls ages 4-12 will start Monday, Sept. 12 at Leisure Rinks in Orchard Park and Thursday, Sept. 15 at Holiday Twin Rinks in Cheektowaga.
