Police: Gowanda man’s marijuana came in mail addressed to dead brother

A Gowanda man possessed marijuana he received in packages addressed to his dead brother, Gowanda police said.

Authorities on Monday executed a search warrant at the Can Do bottle redemption, 185 Buffalo St., Gowanda police said.

During the search, investigators found a package delivered Monday by a private mail carrier containing 3½ pounds of marijuana. About $2,300 in cash was also seized, police said.

The packages were being shipped from another state to the man’s business address in the name of his deceased brother, police said.

Smith, 36, of West Main Street, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a class D felony. Smith was arraigned in Collins Town Court and released on $1,500 bail.

The Southern Tier Regional Drug Task Force, Gowanda police and the Chautauqua and Erie County Sheriff’s offices executed the warrant.
