Power Take: It’s not a given new stadium would be better than New Era Field

The name New Era Field is yet another reason to feel good about going to Orchard Park to watch the Bills. Now let’s hope we all can keep going there for at least, say, another decade.

I like the fact the new name is “field” not “stadium.” It makes one think of Lambeau Field, Wrigley Field or Soldier Field, classic American sports venues. New Era Field was utilitarian when it was built, but it has grown into an incredibly user-friendly park with a history that Western New Yorkers love.

A new stadium is inevitable. But what will a new stadium do for the average fan? Fewer seats? Yep. Better parking? No. Better tailgating downtown? I don’t think so. At least some modest seat licenses? For sure. Higher ticket prices? A hundred percent. There will be wider concourses and more gourmet food. There will be a dome. That’ll be the big selling point. (Maybe we don’t realize what we’re missing, but none of my friends complain about sitting outside.)

Nevertheless, what the NFL wants, the NFL gets. Jerry Jones, Bob Kraft and Stan Kroenke will demand a new stadium. Enjoy New Era Field while it lasts.
