Alice T. Voigt, registered nurse and community volunteer

March 21, 1930 – Aug. 18, 2016

Alice T. Voigt, of Cheektowaga, a registered nurse, died Thursday in Sisters Hospital St. Joseph Campus in Cheektowaga. She was 86.

Born in Buffalo, the former Alice Lis was a 1944 graduate of St. John Gualbert School in Cheektowaga and a 1948 graduate of Villa Maria Academy. She earned her RN degree from the Mercy School of Nursing in 1951.

She worked at Mercy Hospital from 1951 to 1954, then moved to Florida, working as a private duty nurse and at Mercy Hospital of Miami Beach. She returned to Buffalo Mercy Hospital in 1956, then joined the staff at St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga in 1961. During her 31-year career there, she helped start the intensive care unit.

Mrs. Voigt went on to work as an outreach coordinator for the Cheektowaga Senior Center from 1994 to 1996. As a resident of Garden Gate Health Care Facility in Cheektowaga, she coached the staff in proper nursing practices and maintained a candy dish for her caregivers.

She also volunteered for the Civil Defense Corps, Meals on Wheels and for the clubs at St. John Gualbert Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner. She also was a former Cub Scout den mother.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was noted for her Christmas cookies.

Her husband of 46 years, Edward W. Sr., died in 2002.

Survivors include a son, Edward Jr.; two daughters, Ann M. Bruhn and Donna L. Jones; a brother, Henry Lis; and a grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John Gualbert Church, 83 Gualbert Ave. at Doat Street, Cheektowaga.
