State Police divers find body of missing kayaker

The body of a kayaker who went missing in Lake Erie Tuesday night was recovered Thursday morning, Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace said.

Dylan Lathrop, 20, of South Dayton, was last seen near Sunset Bay Beach.

State Police divers found Lathrop’s body at about 10 a.m. in about 16 feet of water “in close proximity” to where Lathrop was last seen, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Lathrop was among four kayakers who encountered high waves in the lake, near the mouth of Cattaraugus Creek, investigators have said.

Lathrop’s kayak capsized west of the breakwall at about 8:30 p.m. and he was last seen standing in four feet of water before disappearing in the treacherous conditions. His three friends were able to make it back to shore.

Numerous agencies have been searching for him since Tuesday night. Recovery efforts on Wednesday were “hampered by extremely poor visibility,” the sheriff’s office said.
