Search suspended for missing kayaker in Lake Erie

Search efforts were suspended Wednesday evening for the kayaker who went missing in the Sunset Bay Beach area of Lake Erie on Tuesday evening, according to a representative of the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

The missing kayaker has been identified as Dylan Lathrop, 20, of South Dayton, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

An investigation found that he and three friends from South Dayton encountered high southeastern waves. The other kayakers were able to make it to shore without assistance, according to the release.

Lathrop’s kayak capsized at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday west of the breakwall. Lathrop was last seen standing in four feet of water before disappearing amidst the waves, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class David Sukel.

The Coast Guard was notified at about 10:30 p.m. and was searching by both water and air, Sukel said. Rescue efforts were suspended in the early morning hours due to visibility.

Several regional and national groups, including the Coast Guard, helped out Wednesday in the ongoing search.

Lathrop’s kayak was recovered, Sukel said.
