Orchard Park reports rash of home break-ins, thefts from cars

Nearly 50 burglaries and larcenies have been reported to Orchard Park police over the past 10 days, and detectives say thieves are taking advantage of unlocked houses and vehicles.

“All of the reports include houses and cars that were unlocked, some of the cars had the keys in the consoles,” Orchard Park police said in a statement. “The suspects appear to be capitalizing on insecure houses and vehicles, bypassing secure ones.

The most recent incident occurred early Saturday morning. Police responded to a burglary call about 4:30 a.m. on Henning Drive and observed a vehicle running in a driveway of a Stonehenge Drive residence. A man was seen getting out and then re-entering the vehicle.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle after it left, the vehicle fled though the village and headed toward Southwestern Boulevard. The vehicle was later found burning at the end of Auckland Avenue. The vehicle had been stolen from an East Quaker Road residence.

Items taken during the burglary spree include cash, credit cards, cameras, computers and televisions. Three vehicles have been reported stolen and a vehicle was recovered that had been reported stolen in Buffalo.

Orchard Park Police are asking residents to lock their cars and houses. Anyone with information the thefts is urged contact the Orchard Park Police at 662-6444.
