Strong thunderstorm hitting northern Niagara County

A strong thunderstorm is expected to hit northern Niagara County this afternoon – including Lockport where a fire a tire recycling plant has been burning since Friday.

The thunderstorm, which may pack winds as high as 40 mph, was located near Fort Niagara State Park shortly before 2 p.m. and was expected to proceed east at a rate of 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas affected include: Lockport, Newfane, Youngstown, Middleport, Fort Niagara State Park, Wilson, Barker, Ransomville, Cambria Center and Gasport. It is also expected to hit northeastern Orleans County.

The storm is bringing torrential rain fall and may cause some localized flooding. Also there has been cloud to ground lightning strikes.

Meteorologists urged anyone outside in the storm area to seek shelter inside a building or car.
