Badly charred body found in debris of Lockport fire ruins

LOCKPORT – A badly charred body was found Friday night in fire debris of the HTI Recyling on Stevens Street, according to the Detective Division of the Lockport Police.

The body, discovered shortly before 7 p.m., has been turned over to a Niagara County coroner and will be sent to the Erie County Medical Examiner’s office at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

Lockport police declined to comment on speculation that the body could be Joe Phillips, a 14-year-old Lockport boy missing since early Wednesday evening, who reportedly called a friend to say he was stuck in a tire-recycling building that was burning.

Although Lockport police have not made any official comment, four sources said authorities believe Phillips and his friend set the fire.
