Tonawanda woman charged with violating Leandra’s Law

A Town of Tonawanda woman was charged with violating Leandra’s Law early Thursday after she drove while drunk with two 15-year-olds in the car, town police reported.

Officers were called just after 3 a.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance at a Brighton Road address. While en route, officers were told one of the individuals involved had left the scene with two minors in a vehicle, police said.

Officers located the vehicle, and during a traffic stop found the driver to be intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of 0.18 percent, police said.

Nicole L. Mitri, 21, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated; misdemeanor aggravated DWI; two counts of felony aggravated DWI for allegedly violating Leandra’s Law; two counts of endangering the welfare of a child; and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle for driving with a suspended license.

She was held pending an arraignment Thursday in Town Court.

The 2009 state law makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child age 15 or younger in a vehicle.
