Assault on prisoner’s eye leads to prison time for jail inmate

LOCKPORT – A Niagara County Jail inmate, who struck a fellow prisoner in the eye, soon will become a state prison inmate.

Michael J. Bower, 19, of Harriet Street, City of Tonawanda, was sentenced Monday by State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. to 1 1/3 to four years in state prison.

The victim of the April 18 assault, Johann Hiram, suffered “permanent long-term damage to his left eye,” Kloch said, reading aloud from a probation officer’s presentencing report.

Bower, who was serving time for a misdemeanor assault charge at the time of the altercation, was quoted in the same report as saying, “I don’t know why I reacted the way I did.”
