The Amherst Public Library took home the gold medal Saturday in the Battle of the Books competition at Erie Community College South Campus.
Sponsored by the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library system, the competition featured 28 teams of sixth- through ninth graders. Participants represented 21 different local public libraries whose members spent months practicing trivia questions pertaining to five pre-selected books they were all required to read before the big battle: “NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue and Defense Society,” by Michael Buckley; “Tesla’s Attic,” by Neal Shusterman; “The Wednesday Wars,” by Gary D. Schmidt; “Wild Magic,” by Tamora Pierce; and “Chomp,” by Carl Hiassen.
The winning Amherst Library team was represented by the Audubon, Clearfield, Eggerstville-Snyder and Williamsville branch libraries. Its members were: Rebecca Collins, 13; Joseph Kenney, 14; Colleen Stewart, 12; Fiona Stewart, 14; Feda Su, 13; and Madison Wang, 13. They were guided by head coach and Amherst Public Library librarian Kristi Dougherty and assistant coach Maureen O’Malley.
The runner-up team was from the Grand Island Memorial Library.
The Battle of the Books competition is part of the overall New York State Summer Reading Initiative, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!”
