Police smash window to remove dog from car with temperature of 118 degrees

NIAGARA FALLS – Police smashed a car window Wednesday in order to remove a dog locked inside a car where the temperature was recored at 118 degrees.

An officer saw the Shih Tzu panting heavily in the car’s back seat shortly before 11:30 a.m. The car’s windows were slightly cracked, according to a Niagara Falls police report.

The officer smashed one of the car’s windows and the dog was removed and taken to the SPCA of Niagara where a veterinary technician found the dog’s temperature to be 103.1 degrees. The car was parked in a lot next to the One Niagara building on Rainbow Boulevard.

An infrared thermometer showed the approximate temperature inside the car was more than 118 degrees. There was no water left for the dog, the report said.

Aaron Dingman, 27, of Pittsburgh was issued a violation ticket and is due in Niagara Falls City Court on Aug. 15.
