Authorities trying to determine if body found in Lake Erie is missing fisherman

A boater Thursday morning found a man’s body floating in Lake Erie off the Ontario shoreline today, and authorities are attempting to determine if it is Giusseppe “Joe” Reinhart, who disappeared on a July 26 fishing trip.

The body was found off Port Maitland, Ont., roughly 29 miles west of Crystal Beach, where Reinhart departed alone in a small boat last week.

Investigators are trying to confirm the identity of the body, and it is too soon to say whether it is Reinhart, an Ontario Provincial Police spokesman told The Buffalo News Thursday afternoon.

“At this point, investigators from the OPP are working with Niagara Regional Police in an effort to identify the body,” said Constable Ed Sanchuk. “At this point, he is an unidentified male. I cannot say for sure whether it is the missing fisherman, or whether this has anything to do with the missing fisherman.”

Reinhart, 37, of Niagara Falls, Ont., left for a fishing trip alone, early on the morning of July 26, authorities said. His small, unoccupied boat was found floating off the shore of Hamburg, roughly 10 hours after he departed on his trip.

The U.S. Coast Guard, and several police agencies from both sides of the border have been searching for the body since.
